Zaoqiang FRP (Fibreglass Reinforced Plastic): A Sourcing Guide

Zaoqiang County is in Hengshui, eastern Hebei Province, and is widely known as one of China's main concentrations for fibreglass reinforced plastic, often called FRP or GRP. The cluster covers raw materials — resin, glass fibre, gelcoat — as well as finished products: pipe, tanks, profiles, grating, cooling tower components and custom moulded parts.

FRP is unusual as an engineering material because its properties are determined almost entirely by how it is made, not just what it is made from. Two FRP pipes with the same nominal dimensions can differ substantially in resin type, glass content, wall construction and cure quality, and therefore in pressure rating and service life. This makes specification discipline more important here than in metals, where grade standards do most of the work for you.

Specifications that actually matter

1. Resin system — polyester, vinyl ester, epoxy, phenolic, or bisphenol-A based. This is the single most important decision for chemical resistance, and it should be selected against the actual chemical environment, including concentration and temperature.
2. Glass type — E-glass is standard; C-glass or ECR may be needed in acidic environments.
3. Glass content — the percentage by weight, which directly affects mechanical strength.
4. Manufacturing process — filament winding, hand lay-up, pultrusion, compression moulding, or RTM. Different processes suit different shapes and give different directional strengths.
5. Wall construction — inner liner, structural layer, and whether there is a gelcoat or a resin-rich liner for chemical service.
6. Dimensions and tolerances — diameter, wall thickness, length, and the flange or joint design.
7. Pressure and temperature rating — with a safety factor stated, and the design standard reference.
8. Joints and connections — butt and strap, bell and spigot, flanged, or mechanical coupling.
9. Testing — hydrostatic test, barcol hardness, glass content, visual inspection standard.
10. Packing and transport.

The chemical resistance question

FRP is chosen where steel would corrode and plastic would not hold pressure. That means the chemical environment is the specification. Provide the following to the supplier: the chemical or chemicals, their concentration, the operating temperature range, whether there are alternating or intermittent exposure conditions, and whether the outside of the equipment sees a different environment from the inside.

A supplier who quotes resin type without asking those questions is quoting a generic product. Resin selection is the difference between a tank that lasts ten years and one that fails in eighteen months, and the price difference between resin types is usually modest compared with the cost of premature failure.

Price drivers

Resin type and quantity, glass content, process, mould cost for non-standard shapes, size, and testing requirements. Cylindrical products at standard diameters are the most economical because tooling exists; anything non-standard carries tooling cost. Hand lay-up is labour-intensive and therefore more expensive per kilogram than filament winding or pultrusion, but it handles complex shapes that the other processes cannot.

Where an order is a repeat of an existing product, ask what the tooling situation is — buying against existing tooling is significantly cheaper than paying for a new mould.

How to vet a supplier

Ask what process will be used for your product and whether the resin and glass are bought to a specified grade or bought on price. Ask for barcol hardness readings and, where relevant, a hydrostatic test record.

For chemical service, ask for a resin supplier data sheet for the specific resin proposed, and cross-check its chemical resistance table against your actual operating conditions and temperature.

Logistics and lead times

Standard pipes and profiles ship in one to three weeks. Tanks, large vessels and custom moulded parts typically run three to eight weeks including mould work. FRP is bulky and relatively light, so freight is volume-driven — a large tank may need a dedicated vehicle and possibly a special permit. Products should be protected from impact and from excessive UV during storage; ask how they are packed and how they should be stored on arrival.

Common pitfalls

• Choosing resin by cost rather than by chemical compatibility.
• Not stating glass content by weight.
• Assuming all FRP pipe of a given diameter has the same pressure rating.
• Forgetting that joints and flanges are often the weak point and need their own specification.
• Underestimating transport cost for bulky items.
