Acceptance testing

This is the single highest-value thing a machinery buyer can insist on. Before shipment, ask for a factory acceptance test on your own material if possible, with the machine running at rated speed and producing good product. Record the test — output rate, waste rate, print register, cut accuracy — and make those numbers part of the contractual specification.

Insist on seeing the machine run under load rather than at demonstration speed on ideal material. Many machinery disputes end with the buyer saying "it does not run at the stated speed in our factory", and a recorded acceptance test on representative material is what settles it.

Price drivers

Machine size and format, number of stations or colours, drive and control system, components used (bearings, servo drives, pneumatic parts), degree of automation, and tooling. Component brand is a legitimate price differentiator: two machines that look alike can differ substantially because one uses a recognised servo system and another uses a cheaper one.

Beware low prices on complex machines. A machine with a lower specification motor, thinner frame sections or a simplified control system will cost less and will reveal why in the second year of operation. Ask for a component list and compare it before comparing prices.

How to vet a supplier

Ask how many units of this model they have built and where they are running. Ask for customer references, and where practical, visit an installation. In machinery, an installed base is the most reliable signal of whether the builder can support what it sells.

Ask about after-sales support explicitly: response time, spare parts availability for the machine's expected life, and whether the company can send engineers to your country and at what cost. A machine bought without that conversation can become very expensive.

Logistics and lead times

Simple machines ship in two to four weeks; larger lines and custom configurations run six to twelve weeks or more. Machinery is heavy and bulky, so shipping is often on flat racks or in full containers with careful bracing, and the cost of crating and inland haulage is significant.
