The conductor class matters more than most buyers realise. A flexible cable and a fixed-installation cable with the same cross-section have different strand structures, and using the wrong one causes premature failure in moving applications.

Copper (or aluminium) price, which is volatile and usually quoted with a price-validity window tied to the metal market. Beyond metal: insulation material, armouring, screening, fire performance, and whether the cable is made to a full standard or a reduced one.

Drum and packing costs are also real. Cable drums are heavy and take up container space, and drum return charges may apply. For long lengths, the drum configuration affects freight meaningfully.

How to vet a supplier

Ask which standards they are certified to and request the certificate. Ask for a type test report from an accredited laboratory for the specific cable construction you are ordering; a certificate for a different construction does not cover yours.

Then verify on arrival on every shipment, not just the first: measure conductor strands and diameter, check the outer sheath thickness, weigh a measured length, and conduct an insulation resistance test if you have the means. These are quick checks that catch the most common substitution.

Standard constructions in stock lengths ship within one to two weeks; custom core counts, colours and armouring run three to six weeks.
