5 Costly Mistakes When Buying Stainless Steel Bird Spikes

Most of the money lost on stainless steel bird spikess orders is not lost on price. It is lost on five repeatable mistakes that are all avoidable at the specification stage — before anything is made, shipped or claimed.

Mistake 1: Pins pulling out of the base

How to avoid it: Put it in the specification, not in an email afterwards: the grade, the tolerance and the test that would have caught it.

Mistake 2: Base yellowing and brittleness

How to avoid it: Ask for the per-batch test record that proves the property in question — pin pull-off force test (≥ 50 N per pin); base bend test 180° without cracking — before the goods ship, not after they arrive.

Mistake 3: Rust streaks on the façade

304 pins sold as 316, or plain steel wire mixed into the bundle; every rust streak on stone is a claim

How to avoid it: Agree the acceptance criterion and the inspection stage in writing, and reference it on the packing list so the check is not optional.

Mistake 4: Treating every stainless steel bird spikes quotation as the same product

Suppliers legitimately differ on 304 versus 316 wire; pin diameter (1.3 mm economy versus 2.0 mm heavy duty); pins per metre and row count (single vs double row). A quotation lower than the others usually means one of those levers was moved, not that the margin was thinner.

How to avoid it: Force every quotation onto the same one-page spec — AISI 304 wire pins (standard); AISI 316 wire pins (coastal / chemical) as the material basis — so the price spread means something.

Mistake 5: Ignoring packing and freight until the invoice

How to avoid it: State the packing and labelling in the RFQ and make it a priced line on the quotation, so the comparison is honest.

The one-page check before you place the order

1. Grade and standard fixed on paper: AISI 304 wire pins (standard); AISI 316 wire pins (coastal / chemical), to ISO 4892-2.
2. Size range confirmed: strip length 500 mm (19.7 in); pin height 110–150 mm; base width 20–24 mm; 30–60 pins per metre of ledge.
3. Finish and coating stated: pins left bare stainless — never electro-galvanised, which stains masonry; base available in clear or stone grey.
4. Test evidence agreed: pin pull-off force test (≥ 50 N per pin); base bend test 180° without cracking; salt spray 480 h on 316 pins.
5. Packing priced as a line item: strips nested 50 per inner box, 500–1,000 m per export carton; stainless grades sealed in poly to avoid tea-staining in transit.
6. Minimum order and lead time understood: 1,000 m per specification; mixed 304/316 usually acceptable within one order, 10–20 days ex-works for repeat specifications; 25–35 days with custom base colour.
