How to Source Fiber Distribution Box from China
Sourcing fiber distribution boxs looks simple until the first quotation comes back and the price spread between suppliers is wider than the specification spread. That gap is almost never a margin difference. It is the difference between suppliers who are quoting the same part and suppliers who are quoting something that merely looks the same in a photograph.
This guide walks through what actually decides whether a fiber distribution box order goes well, in the order the decisions have to be made.
What you are actually buying
A fiber distribution box is also sold as “FTTH terminal box”; “optical distribution box”; “fibre access terminal” — the names overlap and suppliers will quote different things under the same heading. Before anything else, fix four things on one page:
- Sizing — 4–48 fibre capacity, wall or pole mounted, with or without a built-in splitter
- Material — ABS or PP moulded box, or powder coated steel for larger cabinets
- Standard — IEC 60529, YD/T 2152
- Packing — 20 pcs per carton, mounting kit included
If your enquiry only says “fiber distribution box, please quote”, you will get prices for three different products and no way to compare them.
Where this is made in Hebei
Moulded and assembled in Cangzhou and Nanpi, with sheet-metal and die-cast parts from the same clusters.
That matters for two practical reasons. First, the upstream material and the finishing steps are within a short drive of each other, so a supplier can actually control its coating thickness rather than sending parts across the country and hoping. Second, the cluster has enough capacity that you are usually not buying from the only plant that can make the part — which is what gives you a second and third quotation to compare.
Typical lead time for this product is 25–40 days, and the usual minimum order is 200 pcs.
Send a specification, not a request for price
The single highest-return habit in sourcing from China is sending a proper specification with the first enquiry. For fiber distribution boxs that means:
- A drawing or a dimensioned table: 4–48 fibre capacity, wall or pole mounted, with or without a built-in splitter.
- The material grade you will accept: UV-stabilised ABS; PP for chemical exposure; powder coated steel 1.0–1.2 mm; stainless for coastal sites.
- The standard to be met: IEC 60529 (Enclosure IP ratings); YD/T 2152 (Chinese standard for FTTH access terminals).
- The surface finish: UV-stabilised moulding or powder coating; sealing gasket seated in a moulded groove, not glued.
- The test evidence you want with the shipment: IP65 or IP66 test; UV ageing 1000 h; drop and impact test; adapter insertion loss.
- Packing and labelling requirements: 20 pcs per carton, mounting kit included.
- Order quantity and the expected annual volume.
Suppliers who can answer that list line by line are the ones worth continuing with. Suppliers who reply with a price and no questions are usually going to quote the cheapest thing they make and leave you to find out later.
Sampling, tooling and minimum order
Most of the cost of a first order sits in setup, not in material. For fiber distribution boxs, the usual minimum is 200 pcs, and tooling — a mould, a die, a bending setup — is often quoted separately with an amortisation clause.
Two things to agree before the first sample:
- Whether tooling is a one-off charge, amortised across the first orders, or owned by you. Get it in writing, including what happens to the tool if you move the order.
- Whether the sample is a hand-made approximation or a production sample. A hand sample proves the shape; only a production sample proves the process.
Budget 25–40 days for a repeat specification and add the tooling time on top for a new one.
How to compare quotations properly
Price differs because of these levers, and each one is a real difference in the product:
- Fibre capacity and splitter inclusion
- Body material
- IP rating and gasket design
- Mounting accessories included
Put the cheapest and the most expensive quotation side by side and ask each supplier what they assumed. In practice you will find one of them using a lighter gauge, one skipping a coating step, and one who is simply quoting the same specification properly. That conversation is worth more than another round of price negotiation.
Quality control before shipment
The failures that matter on this product are predictable:
- Lid warping in direct sun — an under-stabilised moulding compound; the lid then no longer compresses the gasket and the box fills with condensation
- Bend radius violated at the drop exit — exit spout too short for the pigtail radius, which is a design issue rather than a manufacturing one
All three are invisible in a photograph and obvious under load. Ask for the inspection to run against the test list in your specification — IP65 or IP66 test; UV ageing 1000 h; drop and impact test; adapter insertion loss — and, on a first order, book the inspection before the goods are packed, not after.
Packing, shipping and documents
Standard export packing for this product is 20 pcs per carton, mounting kit included. Confirm it matches what your own warehouse has to do on arrival; repacking at destination usually costs more than the packing change would have at source.
On terms, FOB and CIF are the common starting points. Whichever you choose, make sure the packing specification is in the order, not in an email.
Your RFQ checklist
Copy this into your next enquiry:
- Product: Fiber Distribution Box (FTTH terminal box, optical distribution box, fibre access terminal).
- Dimensions: 4–48 fibre capacity, wall or pole mounted, with or without a built-in splitter.
- Material and grade: UV-stabilised ABS; PP for chemical exposure; powder coated steel 1.0–1.2 mm; stainless for coastal sites.
- Standard: IEC 60529, YD/T 2152.
- Surface finish: UV-stabilised moulding or powder coating; sealing gasket seated in a moulded groove, not glued.
- Tests and evidence required: IP65 or IP66 test; UV ageing 1000 h; drop and impact test; adapter insertion loss.
- Packing and marking: 20 pcs per carton, mounting kit included.
- Quantity, target price and required delivery date.
- Whether tooling is new and who owns it.
Next: read the fiber distribution box specifications and standards guide before you send this, so the standard reference in line 4 is the right one for your project — then turn it into an inspection plan with the quality inspection checklist.
