5 Costly Mistakes When Buying PET Strapping

Most of the money lost on pet strappings orders is not lost on price. It is lost on five repeatable mistakes that are all avoidable at the specification stage — before anything is made, shipped or claimed.

Mistake 1: Strap losing tension on the pallet

How to avoid it: Put it in the specification, not in an email afterwards: the grade, the tolerance and the test that would have caught it.

Mistake 2: Weak friction welds

How to avoid it: Ask for the per-batch test record that proves the property in question — breaking load and elongation per roll lot; system strength with the specified buckle/seal — before the goods ship, not after they arrive.

Mistake 3: Roll deforming in heat

strap wound too tight or stored in the sun; the coil sets an oval and then feeds badly on the machine

How to avoid it: Agree the acceptance criterion and the inspection stage in writing, and reference it on the packing list so the check is not optional.

Mistake 4: Treating every pet strapping quotation as the same product

Suppliers legitimately differ on strap gauge and width (breaking load follows both); hand vs machine grade; UV package. A quotation lower than the others usually means one of those levers was moved, not that the margin was thinner.

How to avoid it: Force every quotation onto the same one-page spec — hand grade 12.7–16 mm; machine grade 15.5–19 mm as the material basis — so the price spread means something.

Mistake 5: Ignoring packing and freight until the invoice

How to avoid it: State the packing and labelling in the RFQ and make it a priced line on the quotation, so the comparison is honest.

1. Grade and standard fixed on paper: hand grade 12.7–16 mm; machine grade 15.5–19 mm, to ASTM D3950.
2. Size range confirmed: width 12.7–32 mm; thickness 0.6–1.3 mm; breaking loads 300–850 kg; core 200 or 406 mm.
3. Finish and coating stated: embossed both faces; green (standard), black, or printed custom colour.
4. Test evidence agreed: breaking load and elongation per roll lot; system strength with the specified buckle/seal; UV ageing 1000 h (outdoor grade).
5. Packing priced as a line item: coils cartoned 2 per box, palletised; keep out of direct sun in the yard.
6. Minimum order and lead time understood: 500 kg per size; custom colour from 2 tonnes, 12–20 days; custom print 25–35 days.
