5 Costly Mistakes When Buying Crossarm

Most of the money lost on crossarms orders is not lost on price. It is lost on five repeatable mistakes that are all avoidable at the specification stage — before anything is made, shipped or claimed.

Mistake 1: Zinc starved inside the angle

How to avoid it: Put it in the specification, not in an email afterwards: the grade, the tolerance and the test that would have caught it.

Mistake 2: Hole pattern drifting between batches

How to avoid it: Ask for the per-batch test record that proves the property in question — coating thickness at three points per arm; dimensional check of the hole pattern — before the goods ship, not after they arrive.

Mistake 3: Treating every crossarm quotation as the same product

Suppliers legitimately differ on steel section mass per arm; zinc thickness and whether it is certified; hole pattern complexity. A quotation lower than the others usually means one of those levers was moved, not that the margin was thinner.

How to avoid it: Force every quotation onto the same one-page spec — Q235 steel angle 63×63×6 mm; Q345 for long spans as the material basis — so the price spread means something.

Mistake 4: Ignoring packing and freight until the invoice

20 pcs per bundle, steel-strapped; holes must not be blocked by strapping. Packing is not an afterthought on this product: under-packed goods arrive as claims, and last-minute packing upgrades at the port cost several times the factory rate.

3. Finish and coating stated: hot-dip galvanised 70–85 µm; all holes punched before coating, never drilled after.
4. Test evidence agreed: coating thickness at three points per arm; dimensional check of the hole pattern; load test of the centre mounting.
5. Packing priced as a line item: 20 pcs per bundle, steel-strapped; holes must not be blocked by strapping.
6. Minimum order and lead time understood: 200 pcs, 25–40 days.
