5 Costly Mistakes When Buying Chain Link Fence

Most of the money lost on chain link fences orders is not lost on price. It is lost on five repeatable mistakes that are all avoidable at the specification stage — before anything is made, shipped or claimed.

Mistake 1: White rust / poor galvanising

the coating mass is below spec or the wire was not properly fluxed; corrosion starts at the diamond crown

How to avoid it: Put it in the specification, not in an email afterwards: the grade, the tolerance and the test that would have caught it.

Mistake 2: Loose or uneven weave

tension inconsistent across the loom — the fabric waves and will not stretch true on the line

How to avoid it: Ask for the per-batch test record that proves the property in question — wire tensile strength; coating mass per unit area — before the goods ship, not after they arrive.

Mistake 3: Sharp or missing selvage

a barbed selvage was specified but not finished, or knuckled ends were cut — a handling and safety hazard

How to avoid it: Agree the acceptance criterion and the inspection stage in writing, and reference it on the packing list so the check is not optional.

Mistake 4: Treating every chain link fence quotation as the same product

Suppliers legitimately differ on wire gauge (heavier wire = stiffer fabric and higher cost); galvanising class (G60 vs G90) or PVC coating; fence height and diamond size. A quotation lower than the others usually means one of those levers was moved, not that the margin was thinner.

How to avoid it: Force every quotation onto the same one-page spec — Q195 low-carbon steel wire; Q235 low-carbon steel wire as the material basis — so the price spread means something.

Mistake 5: Ignoring packing and freight until the invoice

rolls on cardboard cores, wrapped in woven fabric; posts and fittings supplied separately, bundled. Packing is not an afterthought on this product: under-packed goods arrive as claims, and last-minute packing upgrades at the port cost several times the factory rate.

How to avoid it: State the packing and labelling in the RFQ and make it a priced line on the quotation, so the comparison is honest.

The one-page check before you place the order

1. Grade and standard fixed on paper: Q195 low-carbon steel wire; Q235 low-carbon steel wire, to ASTM A392.
2. Size range confirmed: mesh 25–100 mm (1 in to 4 in diamond), wire 1.5–4.5 mm, fence height 0.9–3.6 m, roll length 10–30 m.
3. Finish and coating stated: hot-dip galvanised (G60 / G90) or polyester-coated (commonly green or black) over galvanised; stainless supplied plain.
4. Test evidence agreed: wire tensile strength; coating mass per unit area; diamond uniformity and twist count.
5. Packing priced as a line item: rolls on cardboard cores, wrapped in woven fabric; posts and fittings supplied separately, bundled.
6. Minimum order and lead time understood: 50 rolls per specification, mixed heights can usually be combined, 15–30 days ex-works for standard heights, 30+ days for bespoke coatings or colours.
